I just wanted to say hello! I've actually lurked for awhile, as my Google searches on Rosacea often point me here. I finally decided to register and post, primarily because I simply can't stand this bleepity-bleep condition and while my family/friends/doctor are all very nice, they really don't quite *get* it. Even my dermatologist isn't all that helpful! Ergo, I decided to register, say hello and offer a thank you for all the information shared here.
I'm in my mid-30's, and I don't know exactly when my Rosacea started. I can say I've had sub derm since middle/high school. Sometime in my mid-20s, I think the redness started, and it has progressed now to my cheeks, nose, chin and chest. It's always there, and then worse, of course, when I flush. I really, really hate people asking me if I've spent time in the sun! Now I'm noticing little veins in my cheeks. Argh! I'm of Irish descent, and my grandfather and mother both had/have Rosacea, quite severe in later life. I'm Subtype 1 & 2, though 2 I can directly link to hormone fluctuations. I have enlarged pores on my nose and cheeks, almost as if they were swollen. My dermatologist prescribed a few different things, some sulfur cleanser something or other with a green tint (I forgot, it was awhile back), Metrogel or cream (again, awhile back), as well as sulfacetamide sodium-sulfur for the sub derm. None of them worked for the Rosacea, though the sub derm was kept well under control. About 8 months ago I ran out of the sulfacetamide sodium-sulfur, and I couldn't get back into the dermatologist's office for a new prescription right away and they wouldn't refill without a visit. Time went by and low and behold, I have no symptoms of the sub derm anymore. Cool, no? Unfortunately, the Rosacea never lessened while using any of those products.
So, for the last few months, I've been thinking about triggers, products, and exploring other ways to combat Rosacea. I might go back to the dermatologist soon, but I need to figure out what else is going on before I start putting prescription products all over my face. Which is why I'm here.
Heat is a big problem for me. I've stopped taking hot showers, I dry my hair on the cold/warm hair dryer setting, I drink my coffee/tea lukewarm, and I drink ice water when I feel flushed. I try to regulate my body temperature as best I can, though it often seems my torso is hot and my feet/hands are cold. Neither is comfortable! Abrasion is a flushing trigger too, so I pat my face dry, apply any facial products and makeup lightly. Other known flushing triggers are some spicy foods (but not all), some beer and wine (but not all), and sun exposure (though that only is a problem when I get hot). I just started a food diary, because I notice that I often flush after I eat, but not every time, so I know some kind of food is a trigger--I just don't know what. Weirdly, I think bananas might a trigger!
At this point, I use Dove unscented bar soap on my face (just a trial, as someone told me it was mild?), and Jojoba oil as a moisturizer. So far the oil makes my skin super soft and has minimized wrinkles (yay!), but I'm not noticing a difference on the redness. I do use makeup, but I try to use mineral based or those for sensitive skin.
Basically, very long story short, I can often control the flushing and p&p, but I can never get the redness to go away. Argh again! Now I'm thinking about probiotics, going gluten free or dairy free, and anything else I can think of. I just don't know what to try first/next. There is so much information out there, and yet each person's results are different. So I'm just going to go by trial and error and see what happens...
