New to Rosacea

jeudi 24 septembre 2015

Hello all,

A little about me: I have been possibly diagnosed, just last week, with rosacea. I say possibly because my dermatologist stated it could also be atopic or seborrheic dermatitis, or even a fungal infection or an allergy. The derm prescribed medication via the shotgun approach, namely a fungicidal cream, anti-bacterial cream, antihistamine, and an oral antibiotic, the latter she said I would have to take for the rest of my life. No tests, other than a visual examination, were performed. So far, nothing has worked. I am very confused, and have been searching the net for answers.

My rash started suddenly, six months ago, as a small patch of scaly skin next to my right eye. Alternately itching and burning, it would come and go, then slightly expand. OTC medications did nothing. It increased in size, then spread to the other eye. Both eyes tear occasionally. My regular doctor was of little help, prescribing Bactroban and an oral antibiotic. I had severe reactions to both. It took three months just to get in to a dermatologist; I've seen her now twice (the first time atopic dermatitis was diagnosed, and Tacrolimus ointment was prescribed to no effect). The rash has settled in around my eyes, is red, slightly bumpy, and a little itchy. I am very sensitive to medication, and have been looking for a natural approach, if possible. I take no other medications.

I currently use a sulfur-based soap for face-washing, and a tea tree oil shampoo. Both help to stop the itch.

I can think of no lifestyle changes/modifications recently, except that I stopped drinking alcohol (beer and wine) just before the symptoms started. I remain alcohol-free. I am in good health otherwise, having been on a LCHF diet for the last three years which completely solved my digestion issues (acid reflux).

As nothing has worked so far, I am stumped, and don't know where to go. Hence this forum. My next derm appt. is in 8 weeks, the soonest they could make it. Dermatologists in my area are in demand and most have very long waits.

Sorry for the long-winded introduction, but I had to get that out of the way. I'm interested to know if anyone has had a similar experience. Again, I'm not sure that what I have is rosacea, and neither are my doctors. So far, the medical community has been of little help.

Regards,
DE
